Ligament injuries commonly occur due to sports, falls, twisting movements or direct trauma. They may cause pain, swelling, instability, restricted movement and difficulty bearing weight. Commonly affected ligaments include the ACL, PCL, MCL and LCL of the knee, as well as ligaments around other joints.
A detailed clinical examination helps assess joint stability, movement and the severity of the injury. X-rays may be used to evaluate associated bone injuries, while MRI can provide detailed information about ligament tears and associated meniscus, cartilage or soft-tissue injuries. Treatment is planned according to the ligament involved, injury severity, activity level and functional requirements.
Selected ligament injuries may be treated with repair when the torn ligament and injury pattern are suitable. In other cases, particularly certain complete ligament tears, ligament reconstruction may be considered using an appropriate graft. Arthroscopic techniques may be used for selected knee ligament procedures, allowing the surgeon to address associated injuries when necessary.
Rehabilitation is an important part of recovery following ligament surgery. A structured physiotherapy programme focuses on restoring range of motion, muscle strength, joint stability, coordination and functional movement. Recovery is progressed gradually, with follow-up assessments helping determine when it is appropriate to return to work, daily activities or sports.
