The menisci are crescent-shaped pieces of cartilage that act as cushions between the thigh bone and shin bone. A meniscus tear can occur due to sports injuries, twisting movements or age-related degeneration and may cause knee pain, swelling, catching, clicking or difficulty with movement.
A detailed clinical examination helps assess knee stability, movement and the nature of symptoms. MRI may be used to evaluate the location, pattern and extent of the tear. Treatment is selected according to the patient’s age, activity level, tear characteristics, associated injuries and the condition of the meniscal tissue.
When the tear is suitable for preservation, arthroscopic meniscus repair may be considered to restore the torn tissue rather than remove it. Small instruments and a camera are introduced through small incisions, allowing the surgeon to assess and repair the meniscus. Repair techniques vary according to the tear pattern and location.
Recovery after meniscus repair involves a structured rehabilitation programme designed to protect the repair while gradually restoring knee movement and strength. Physiotherapy may include controlled range-of-motion exercises, progressive strengthening and functional training. Follow-up assessments help guide activity progression and the eventual return to work, sport or everyday activities.
